אירנה (אירה) ליאן עוסקת בסוציולוגיה של קוריאה המודרנית בדגש על הנס הכלכלי, הידוע גם בשם "הנס על נהר האן" והנס התרבותי, הידוע גם בשם "הגל הקוריאני" או הליו. מחקרי עוסקים במגוון של נושאים הנוגעים לדימוי של קוריאה בעולם העסקים, חדשנות וגניבה טכנולוגית, עוצמה רכה, תעשיות תרבות יצירתיות, לימודי פאנדום ועוד.

היא סיימה את הדוקטורט בלימודי ארגון במחלקה לסוציולוגיה ואנתרופולוגיה באוניברסיטה העברית (2017). אחרי השתלמויות פוסט-דוקטורט בירושלים, ברלין ואוקספורד אירה חזרה לחוג ללימודי אסיה בתור ראשת המדור ללימודי קוריאה.

אירה מלמדת קורסי חובה על החברה הקוריאנית בעידן המודרני והפרה-מודרני וקורסי בחירה לתואר ראשון אודות "הנס הכלכלי הקוריאני" ו"תרבות פופולרית בדרום קוריאה" ו-"מגדר ומיניות בקולנוע וספרות קוריאנית." בעבר היא ניהלה שתי תכניות דו-חוגיות עם מנהל עסקים (2013-2017) ועם יחסים בינלאומיים (2016-2017) וריכזה את הקורסים עם מרצים-אורחים - אנשי עסקים, דיפלומטים ואקדמאים – "פורום כלכלות מזרח אסיה" ו-"אסיה בזירה הבינלאומית."
